Airport outrage mounts over aviation security officials’ excesses

Growing controversies surrounding Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel have ignited passenger outrage and calls for reforms at Nigerian airports. A recent incident at Osubi Airport, captured in a viral video, exemplifies the mounting frustration. A female traveler clashed with AVSEC officers during a manual baggage search, disputing their claim that canned milk and fish products posed a leak risk. She noted she had traveled with the same items without issue, intensifying the dispute when an officer asked her to stop filming.

The video sparked widespread criticism, with many viewing it as another instance of inconsistent regulation enforcement and mistreatment by security officials. While the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) announced an investigation, the outcomes of previous probes remain largely undisclosed. This pattern of unrevealed results exacerbates public distrust and amplifies concerns about accountability within airport security operations.
