Airports Designated Critical Infrastructure for Poland's Economic Security

The decision to include Polish Airports (PPL) in the government's register of companies of significant importance to the state's economy is a strategic move that PPL has actively championed. This designation elevates PPL, the operator and owner of critical aviation infrastructure, to a status alongside energy giants like Orlen and national carrier LOT Polish Airlines. PPL's leadership views this inclusion as essential for facilitating investments, leveraging specific exemptions in public procurement law, and bolstering national defense and economic security, particularly in the current challenging geopolitical climate.

This new status will help PPL maintain that necessary secrecy, ensuring the protection of critical assets and functions. The company's 100% state ownership, enshrined in law since its transition to a joint-stock company, means that potential privatization concerns are non-existent, allowing PPL to focus on its core mission without owner-related restrictions.

Polish Airports are not merely conduits for passenger traffic; they are recognized as key drivers of economic development. With Poland's air mobility rate significantly lower than in Western Europe (1.5 trips per person versus 4-5), there is substantial room for growth. The 66 million passengers handled last year generated over 60 billion PLN in additional GDP and support over half a million jobs. PPL estimates that a 10% increase in air connectivity could boost GDP by 5%. Currently contributing 1.5% to Poland's GDP, aviation has the potential to reach 4-5% seen in Western Europe. However, this growth is contingent on significant investment, with over 50 billion PLN planned, as current airport capacity is nearing its limit, with major upgrades largely dating back to before Euro 2012. This strategic positioning underscores the vital role of airports in enhancing national resilience and economic prosperity.
