Ajayi set for Silesia Diamond League showdown

Nigerian sprint sensation Kayinsola Ajayi is poised to make his mark at the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial in Silesia, Poland, on Sunday, participating in the men's 100m event. This marks his return to Diamond League action at the penultimate leg of the Road to the Final series, following a quick turnaround after the Athletissima meeting in Lausanne.

Ajayi faces a formidable field that includes world champion Oblique Seville, Olympic champion Andre De Grasse, and American sprinters Christian Coleman and Kenneth Bednarek, among others. He will also reignite his rivalry with Commonwealth Games champion Emmanuel Eseme of Cameroon. This competition comes amidst a stellar season for the 21-year-old, who has firmly established himself as one of the world's elite young sprinters.

His breakthrough year saw him shatter Olusoji Fasuba's 20-year-old Nigerian 100m record of 9.85 seconds in May, clocking an impressive 9.84. Ajayi has since equaled this national record twice and achieved two Diamond League victories this season. His strong performances continued at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where he earned a bronze medal in the 100m.

Announcing his transition to professional athletics on Thursday, Ajayi revealed he would forgo his final year of collegiate eligibility at Auburn University to sign with Adidas. "New era. With the Diamond League Final in Brussels approaching, Ajayi aims to cap his remarkable season with another outstanding performance in Silesia.
