Đắk Lắk Prepares to Repatriate 22 Martyrs' Remains from Cambodian Battlefield

In a poignant display of enduring camaraderie and respect, officials from Vietnam's Dak Lak province and Cambodia's Mondulkiri province have convened to coordinate the repatriation of fallen Vietnamese soldiers. This collaborative effort, focused on the remains of volunteer soldiers and experts who sacrificed their lives during wartime in Cambodia, underscores the deep historical ties and mutual remembrance between the two nations.

The recent dry season, spanning 2025-2026, saw a dedicated team, K51, successfully locate and gather 22 sets of unidentified remains in the challenging terrain of Mondulkiri. This painstaking work, conducted under difficult weather conditions and evolving geographical landscapes, is a testament to the commitment of both Vietnamese and Cambodian authorities. The successful recovery is a direct result of the close cooperation and understanding established between the two provinces, as outlined in a previously signed memorandum of understanding.

The Cambodian side affirmed that it always remembers and is grateful for the help of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts in the war periods, and at the same time committed to continuing to maximally support the search, collection, and repatriation of martyrs' remains.

Both sides acknowledged the critical role of the local Cambodian authorities and people of Mondulkiri in facilitating this sensitive operation. The Vietnamese delegation, led by Mr. Dao My, Vice Chairman of the Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee and head of the Steering Committee 515, expressed profound gratitude for the unwavering support. This endeavor not only honors the Vietnamese martyrs but also strengthens the long-standing friendship and solidarity between Dak Lak and Mondulkiri.

Looking ahead, a solemn ceremony is scheduled for May 27th. Here, the 22 sets of remains will be respectfully handed over and bid farewell according to Cambodian traditions before their journey back to Dak Lak. This repatriation is more than a logistical process; it is a deeply symbolic act of national remembrance and a reaffirmation of the sacrifices made. For Vietnam, and particularly for Dak Lak province, this is a matter of immense national pride and a solemn duty to bring home those who served abroad, ensuring their final resting place is on Vietnamese soil.
