AKOM warns Istanbul: Thunderstorms expected Friday

Istanbul will remain warm through the week, but AKOM is warning residents to watch for strong northerly winds and local rain on Friday.

The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s Disaster Affairs and Risk Management Department said temperatures would rise from 22 degrees Celsius in the morning to 30 degrees at midday before falling to 24 degrees in the evening and 22 degrees overnight. Temperatures are generally expected to remain between 28 and 30 degrees during the week.

Northerly winds, especially the poyraz, are forecast to reach 20-50 km/h today. AKOM said the winds would bring relatively cooler air and prevent temperatures from rising excessively. Apart from Friday’s expected showers, the city is not expected to see significant rainfall.

Friday’s forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and local rain, with temperatures ranging from 21 to 28 degrees and rainfall of 1-3 kilograms per square metre. Saturday and Sunday are expected to be mostly clear, with temperatures reaching 30 and 31 degrees respectively. Monday should be partly cloudy, while clear weather is forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday as temperatures fall further.
