AKP officials dismiss 'snap election' rumors, point to 2027

Ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) officials have strongly refuted rumors of an impending "snap election" or "early election," asserting that such discussions are baseless. They emphasized that the party's current priorities lie with the "Terror-Free Turkey" process, regional developments, and economic progress.

The speculation arose following a court decision that declared the 38th Ordinary and 21st Extraordinary Congresses of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) as "absolutely void." This ruling led to calls for the removal of CHP leader Özgür Özel and the party's executive board, with a proposal for former leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and the previous Party Council to temporarily resume their duties. The subsequent uncertainty fueled claims of an early election.

AKP officials dismissed these claims as "nonsense," explaining that calling for a presidential election would require a parliamentary decision, as President Erdoğan would be eligible to run again. However, they noted that the current distribution of seats in parliament makes it impossible for the Cumhur İttifak (People's Alliance) to unilaterally decide on an election. "Discussing snap election claims under these circumstances is nothing but nonsense," one official stated.

Furthermore, AKP officials clarified that they do not foresee any election taking place before the autumn of 2027. Their focus remains on the ongoing processes and challenges, rather than electoral maneuvers. The party leadership appears committed to governing without the immediate prospect of a general election.
