Alameda Central Clear of Vendor Blockades as Rest Days Take Effect

Alameda Central, a major public park in Mexico City, was notably free of street vendor blockades on Tuesday morning. This respite followed a week of disruptions caused by vendors protesting new regulations for public spaces. Some groups had previously staged partial blockades of Hidalgo and Juárez avenues, causing traffic issues.

The current situation aligns with agreements established with the Government Secretariat, which stipulate that street vendors should observe rest days on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. During a site visit, it was observed that the central walkways and fountains of the park were clear, allowing for unimpeded pedestrian flow.

However, feminist collectives continued their usual practice of selling products, setting up on the corner of Ángela Peralta street and Juárez Avenue. Security and government personnel maintained a presence around the park perimeter.

Regular visitors expressed mixed feelings. Jose Luis, who frequents the park, believes Alameda Central should be free of vendors to function as a vital green space for the city. He finds the commercial clutter disruptive and advocates for the prioritization of the park's reorganization. Raquel Padilla, visiting from the State of Mexico, agreed that reducing the number of vendors and respecting their rest days would be beneficial, suggesting that sales might be better on weekends anyway.

Government officials have stated they will not yield to pressure from vendors opposing the new regulations. César Cravioto, the Secretary of Government, affirmed that Alameda Central belongs to the city and its visitors, emphasizing the government's commitment to the reorganization plan.
