Alarm Raised in Netherlands Over Ecstasy Pills Shaped Like Donald Trump's Head

Health officials in the Netherlands are sounding the alarm over a new batch of ecstasy pills circulating in the country, distinguished by their distinctive shape: the head of former U.S. President Donald Trump. The Trimbos Institute, a research center focused on addiction and mental health based in Utrecht, has identified a significant health risk associated with these pills.

Tests conducted in August revealed "very high" levels of PMMA, a substance known for its potential to cause severe health issues, within the Trump-shaped ecstasy. The institute explicitly warned consumers, "Do not use this pill under any circumstances." Experts highlight that PMMA can lead to dangerous spikes in body temperature, which can result in fatal health complications.

A key danger of these PMMA-laced pills, according to specialists, is their delayed onset of effects. Unlike MDMA, the typical active ingredient in ecstasy, PMMA's impact is not immediately felt. This can lead users to believe the pill is ineffective and take more, significantly increasing the risk of a dangerous overdose.

Symptoms of PMMA intoxication can include nausea, increased heart rate, and seizures, appearing hours after consumption. While the Trimbos Institute has not yet received reports of deaths or severe health incidents directly linked to these specific pills, the warning underscores the ongoing challenges with illicit drug use in the Netherlands. Despite ecstasy being illegal, its use remains prevalent, particularly in entertainment venues, with an estimated 550,000 people having used it in 2022.
