Albania Defends Million-Euro Investment for Kanye West Concert Amid Criticism

Albania's government is defending its decision to allocate 4 million euros (approximately $4.6 million) to fund an upcoming concert by controversial American rapper Kanye West in the capital. Minister of Culture Blendi Gonxhe stated that the success of such an event is not solely measured by ticket sales, emphasizing the potential tourism benefits.

West has a history of provoking outrage, including past comments where he praised Adolf Hitler, released a song titled "Heil Hitler," and sold t-shirts featuring a swastika on his website. He has since denied being antisemitic and attributed some of his past statements to his bipolar disorder.

The significant investment in the concert is occurring while Albania is experiencing protests demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. These demonstrations, now in their second month, initially focused on protecting a nature reserve but have evolved into a broader expression of public anger over corruption. The protests have also been fueled by a separate tourism complex project linked to the family of former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Local media reports suggest that ticket sales for the concert, which was planned to accommodate 60,000 attendees with a specially constructed venue, have fallen significantly short of expectations.
