Albrook Pool rehabilitation tender announced for nearly $8 million

The Albrook Pool in Panama, once a key facility for athlete training, is set to undergo a major rehabilitation following a tender announcement by Pandeportes for nearly $8 million. The facility has suffered severe deterioration, characterized by stagnant water, corrosion-damaged structures, overgrown vegetation, and a worn diving platform.

The planned rehabilitation project is comprehensive. It includes enclosing the pool with a roof, building spectator stands capable of seating approximately 325 people, and renovating the existing children's pool. Once the contract is awarded, the construction work is expected to take 15 months to complete.

Miguel Ordóñez, the director of Pandeportes, attributed the pool's current state of disrepair to previous administrations. He acknowledged that the agency lacks sufficient personnel to ensure consistent maintenance. Consequently, Pandeportes is considering contracting ongoing maintenance services through an addendum to the current contract or a separate bidding process once the rehabilitation is finished.

This initiative comes after a report highlighted the pool's advanced state of neglect. The director's visit to the site underscored the urgent need for these repairs and the commitment to restoring the facility.
