Alcolumbre seeks Lula's favor with Moraes' help for continued influence

Senator Davi Alcolumbre, who has presided over the Senate since 2019, has reportedly been orchestrating a political reconciliation with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, with Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes acting as a key intermediary. This rapprochement is seen as a strategic move by Alcolumbre, who has wielded significant influence through the distribution of "secret budget" funds, a parallel electoral fund that has allowed him to exert power and create imbalances.

Alcolumbre, who has directed substantial funds to his home state of Amapá, is reportedly concerned about ongoing Federal Police investigations, particularly regarding the potential "militarization" of the corporation and the "criminalization of political activity." His anxieties stem from past Federal Police inquiries into Amprev, the Amapá state pension fund, which had invested heavily in a fund managed by his former campaign treasurer. He also led efforts to reject Lula's nominee to the Supreme Court in February, showcasing a period of political tension.

Described as a pragmatist who transforms distrust into opportunity, Alcolumbre is now seeking to align with Lula to protect his political interests. This alliance is crucial for his potential re-election as Senate president in 2027, especially given the uncertainty surrounding the political leanings of the Senate in the future. He aims to avoid being perceived as part of the "old politics" that he once promised to break away from, seeking instead to embody a form of "renewal" that is not inherently positive but rather instrumental.

The mediation by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, a friend to both Lula and Alcolumbre, is central to this political maneuvering. Moraes, who has been observed visiting Alcolumbre's residence, has an interest in maintaining a strong Alcolumbre in the Senate, particularly one who can block inquiries such as the CPI da Toga and the Master investigation. Their frequent meetings, discussing everything from pleasantries to delicate political negotiations, highlight the intricate web of alliances and mutual interests at play in Brazilian politics.
