Alcolumbre seeks to send Pacheco to Brazil’s audit court without a hearing and secure Senate approval by Wednesday

Davi Alcolumbre is moving to place Rodrigo Pacheco before Brazil’s Senate for approval to the Federal Court of Accounts, potentially without the confirmation hearing normally associated with such nominations.

The Senate president is coordinating with senators to bring Pacheco’s name to the floor on Tuesday or, at the latest, Wednesday. The effort follows the resignation of TCU minister Bruno Dantas and comes during a week of concentrated congressional activity.

TCU President Vital do Rego is expected to formally notify the Senate of the vacancy on Monday. Alcolumbre wants to complete the approval before the elections, and allies of Pacheco expect him to win by a wide margin.

The Constitution requires confirmation hearings only for nominees selected by the presidency. Pacheco would be nominated by Congress and has broad support among senators. After the Senate vote, his name would go to the Chamber of Deputies for review, followed by formal promulgation by Congress.
