Alejandro Fernández songs that became telenovela opening themes

Alejandro Fernández’s connection with Mexican telenovelas began early. In a 1976 interview, when he was five, Raúl Velasco asked whether he or his father, Vicente Fernández, was the better singer. The child answered, “both.” Decades later, “El Potrillo” followed his father into another part of Mexican popular culture by recording songs that became telenovela themes.

One prominent example is “María Isabel,” the 1997 telenovela produced by Carla Estrada and starring Adela Noriega and Fernando Carrillo. The melodrama adapted Yolanda Vargas Dulché’s 1963 fotonovela, which had previously been brought to the screen with Silvia Pinal.

Estrada’s production contacted Sony, the label Fernández was signed to at the time, so the first single from his 1997 album “Me estoy enamorando” could serve as the show’s opening theme. Written by Kike Santander and produced by Emilio Estefan, the song reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Tracks. Manuel Mijares and Noel Schajris later recorded new versions.

Fernández also supplied the title song for “Niña amada mía,” Angeli Nesma’s 2003 telenovela starring Karime Lozano and Sergio Goyri. Written by Jorge Massias, the song also gave its name to Fernández’s tenth album and became a success for both the singer and the melodrama. The production received two TVNovelas awards that year.

In 2013, “La tempestad,” starring Ximena Navarrete and William Levy, used “Hoy tengo ganas de ti.” Fernández recorded the song with Christina Aguilera for his album “Confidencias.” The duet drew strongly positive industry reactions, with particular praise for Aguilera’s performance and for Fernández’s voice as a fitting complement.
