Álex Mumbrú Appointed New Coach of Virtus Bologna

Álex Mumbrú officially became the new head coach of Virtus Bologna on Friday, taking the helm of the historic Italian Lega club. He will concurrently manage his duties as the head coach for the German national team. Mumbrú expressed his excitement for the new role, stating his pride in coaching such a prestigious European club.

The Italian club acknowledged the German Basketball Federation's cooperation in finalizing the agreement, which allows the 47-year-old Catalan coach to hold both positions. Mumbrú guided the German national team to a historic gold medal at the EuroBasket in 2025. His coaching career began at Bilbao Basket from 2018 to 2022, followed by a stint at Valencia Basket from 2022 to 2024, before he took over the German national team.

As a player, Mumbrú had a distinguished career, representing Spain internationally and winning a World Cup, a European Championship gold, a European silver, and an Olympic silver medal at the Beijing 2008 Games. He played for Joventut Badalona, Real Madrid, and Bilbao Basket, accumulating an ACB League title, two Catalan League titles, a ULEB Cup, and a EuroCup. He was a key member of Spain's 'golden generation' alongside players like Pau Gasol and Juan Carlos Navarro.
