Algeria Commemorates Two Military Heroes of the War of Liberation

In the communes of Tazmalt and Ath Mellikeche, Algeria, citizens gathered in late May to honor the sacrifices of two distinguished martyrs from the War of Liberation: Mouhou Mohand Sghir, also known as Sadek, and Hocini Lahlou, or Si Lahlou. These annual commemorations serve as a vital link to the nation's revolutionary past.

The ceremonies took place at significant locations: the Iryahene residence in Béjaïa, named after Mouhou Mohand Sghir, and Tikedjda, where a monument commemorates Hocini Lahlou and his comrades. Family members of the fallen heroes, veterans of the revolution, and numerous citizens attended to pay their respects, demonstrating a strong commitment to preserving historical memory.

Biographies of the honored martyrs were shared, detailing their contributions. Mouhou Mohand Sghir, born in 1935, joined the ALN in 1956 and participated in key operations, including an ambush in Allaghen and the battle of Ighil Ouchekrid. He eventually led a shock group within the historic Wilaya III before his capture and execution in May 1960.

Hocini Lahlou, born in 1930, joined the ALN in 1955. Recognized for his organizational skills, he rose to command the 322nd Katiba and later led a special group operating across Béjaïa and Bouira. His notable actions included an ambush at Tikjda, where his unit successfully attacked colonial forces. The commemorations emphasized the importance of transmitting this revolutionary heritage to younger generations.
