Algeria strengthens cooperation with Niger through agreements, training and expertise transfer

Algeria and Niger have moved from promises to signed agreements on public works and basic infrastructure. Algerian Public Works and Basic Infrastructure Minister Abdelkader Djellaoui received a senior Nigerien delegation led by Abdoulaye Ouma Ahmed, secretary-general of Niger’s Ministry of Equipment and Infrastructure.

The meeting followed commitments made during the second session of the Algerian-Nigerien Joint Commission, held in Niamey on March 23 and 24, 2026. It also built on the June 23 visit to Algeria by Nigerien Equipment and Infrastructure Minister Salissou Mahaman Salissou. The delegations reviewed implementation of a cooperation protocol signed in Niamey on March 24 and examined follow-up work on memorandums of understanding.

Those memorandums link Algeria’s National Authority for Technical Control of Public Works and Central Public Works Laboratory with their Nigerien counterparts. The discussions focused on widening the partnership and strengthening technical capacity. The two sides considered a draft agreement between the Algerian technical-control authority and Niger’s Public Works Quality Center, along with a joint action plan.

They also discussed a training and rehabilitation agreement involving Algeria’s Central Public Works Laboratory and Niger’s National Laboratory for Public Works and Construction. A training program for Nigerien technical officials formed part of the package.

The consultations produced signed cooperation agreements between the laboratories and a finalized joint action plan. Its implementation will begin immediately, with expertise transfers and technical training covering several areas of public works and basic infrastructure. The arrangement is intended to expand technical exchanges between the two countries.
