Algerian man gets 6 years prison, permanent ban from France for threatening police

A man of Algerian nationality has been sentenced to six years in prison and permanently banned from France after threatening police officers with a knife on a train.

The incident took place on August 7th between Menton and Cannes. The man, described as being in a state of obvious intoxication, became violent towards train conductors. Two plainclothes police officers, who were off-duty and traveling to work, intervened to assist the conductors and subdued the man. However, upon arrival at Cannes station, while awaiting a police patrol, the man produced a knife and attempted to stab one of the officers in the neck.

During the altercation, the man fell and injured himself on the knife's blade. He was subsequently transported to the police station and then to the hospital. The officer he threatened sustained minor injuries. A police source revealed that the convicted individual had been under an order to leave French territory since 2018 and possesses a significant criminal record, including theft, aggravated violence, and drug use. He had also previously been convicted for glorifying terrorism in the Paris region.

Julien Hausknecht, a local police union representative who attended the hearing, described the man as having "the perfect profile of a lone wolf." He commended the bravery of the officers, noting they were unarmed and not on duty at the time, highlighting the "permanent" nature of their police mission. The prosecution's requests were largely followed by the court, which imposed the six-year prison sentence, a 3,000-euro fine, and the definitive ban from French territory due to his status as a repeat offender.
