Alishan to Host Stargazing Camp in Autumn and Winter

Taiwan's Alishan National Forest Recreation Area, known for its low light pollution and clear skies, will host a "Starry Mountain City" stargazing and ecological experience camp. Organized by the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency's Chiayi Branch in collaboration with the Chiayi City Astronomy Association, the camp will run for six two-day, one-night sessions between October and December.

Participants will have the opportunity to explore the autumn and winter night skies with professional instructors, using high-powered telescopes to observe celestial bodies. The location's high altitude and clear atmosphere make it an ideal spot for stargazing. The program aims to promote nature appreciation and astronomical education among the public.

Beyond the nighttime activities, the camp includes daytime excursions. Guided tours will lead participants through the Giant Trees Trail and Shuishan Therapeutic Trail, offering insights into Alishan's rich forest ecosystem, its century-old forestry culture, and local stories. A highlight for many will be a ride on the Zhushan Line railway to witness the sunrise and admire the sea of clouds, along with opportunities for solar spot observation.

Registration for the camp opens on August 17 at 9 a.m. online. The program is suitable for families with children in second grade and above, adults, and seniors. Participants will use electric sightseeing cars and the railway to navigate the park. The fee is NT$3,300 per person.
