Failing her Leaving Certificate exams did not deter Suzie O'Neill from building a successful career. The founder and CEO of the Irish beauty brand Ayu Cosmetics now aims to inspire other students facing similar academic setbacks.

Having failed my Leaving Cert, I've still been able to do the courses I wanted to do, start the business I wanted to start, and live the life I wanted to live.

O'Neill shared with RTÉ News that despite her exam results, she pursued the education and career she desired. "There are ways of getting into your courses later on. When you've a passion for something, that is what will get you further," she stated, highlighting the importance of drive and determination.

After leaving school, O'Neill worked while exploring her options. She completed a beauty course, operated her own salon, and gained experience as a teacher for international makeup brands and colleges. This diverse experience laid the groundwork for her entrepreneurial venture.

From the days of the Leaving Cert, there are a lot of people who think you’re a waster or you’re not good enough or you don’t know how to work.

Founded in 2014, Ayu Cosmetics is the realization of O'Neill's dreams. She used her Leaving Cert failure as motivation, aiming to prove her capabilities. "I'll show you what I can do, I'll show you that I am capable," she remarked, reflecting on the drive that propelled her forward. O'Neill's message to current students is to remember that the Leaving Cert is not the definitive end-point of their potential.
