About RTÉ News
RTÉ (Raidió Teilifís Éireann) is Ireland's national public-service media organization, operating as a statutory state corporation and ultimately owned by the State. It is funded through a dual system of public television license fees and commercial advertising revenue, and operates independently of the Government and civil service.
RTÉ News is generally considered to be least biased and highly factual by media watchdogs such as Media Bias/Fact Check and Ground News, with minimal editorializing and credible sourcing. Ireland consistently ranks highly in press freedom indices, indicating a free and independent press environment. However, RTÉ has faced notable controversies, including a 2011 libel settlement, a significant payments scandal in 2023 involving undisclosed payments to a presenter and 'barter accounts', and recent criticism over a promotional ad using actors to portray journalists. There have also been accusations of a 'pro-establishment lean' and a 'subtle liberal tilt' on social issues from some critics, and concerns raised by Reporters Without Borders regarding 'judicial intimidation' of media outlets, including RTÉ, by politicians.
