Alma Rosa Rojo and Daughter Released From Hospital After Shooting, Given Official Protection

Alma Rosa Rojo Medina, founder of the Voices United for Life search collective, and her daughter have left hospital after armed attackers opened fire on their vehicle in Culiacán.

The two women suffered minor shrapnel injuries and continued medical treatment at home, Sinaloa Health Secretary Cuitláhuac González Galindo said. Security authorities helped them leave the IMSS-Bienestar hospital after they received treatment.

Interim Governor Graciela Domínguez Nava said the women would receive all necessary protection while judicial authorities investigate. She also said the state would maintain direct contact with search groups and support their work.

The shooting took place on Jesús Silva Herzog Avenue in the Estela Ortiz neighborhood. Armed people intercepted the white Toyota Yaris carrying Rojo, her daughter and her granddaughters, then fired several shots. Emergency calls brought municipal, state and federal security personnel and Red Cross responders to the scene, where they provided first aid and took the two activists to hospital.

The state prosecutor’s office opened an investigation into attempted feminicide. One line of inquiry examines whether the attack could be connected to Rojo’s work as a member of a collective searching for missing people in Sinaloa.
