Mexico’s disappearances are a national wound, Church says, praising searching mothers

Mexico’s Catholic Church has called the disappearance of people “a wound in Mexico” and urged the country to make the search for those missing a national cause.

Let us remember those who are missing on August 30; let us stand in solidarity with those who search for them; let us demand that authorities fulfill their responsibilities and, as a society, abandon indifference.

In an editorial published through Desde la Fe, the Church said the scale of the tragedy cannot be understood through numbers alone. Each figure represents a name and a family waiting for answers, it said, warning against becoming accustomed to the crisis.

The Church urged solidarity with families searching for their relatives and called on authorities to meet their responsibilities. Those responsibilities include preventing disappearances, launching immediate and effective searches, investigating cases, pursuing justice and creating conditions to stop such crimes from recurring.

The scale of this tragedy cannot be understood only through numbers, because behind every figure there is a name and a family that waits.

It also said reconciliation cannot rest on impunity and that dialogue must not conceal the truth. The Church acknowledged its own responsibility to accompany searching families, create spaces to hear them, help rebuild social ties and promote paths toward peace.

There can be no reconciliation built on impunity, nor dialogue that seeks to hide the truth.

The editorial praised searching mothers and civic groups, saying their pain, courage and persistence have produced advances and decisive discoveries while keeping demands for justice alive. It concluded with a call for society to remain close to families who continue searching for their loved ones.

While thousands of families continue searching for those they love, where are we? May the search for those who are missing find us, and find us close.
