Almond grower loses gun licence after threats to burn biosecurity officers

A Riverland almond grower has lost his gun license after threatening biosecurity officers who visited his farm to inspect trees for fruit fly. The South Australian Civil and Administrative Tribunal ruled the man was not a fit and proper person to hold a firearms license. The decision came after the grower threatened Department of Primary Industries and Regions SA (PIRSA) officers in April 2023. Officers reported the man yelled at them to stop coming onto his property and warned he would "burn your car with you guys alive in it." A tenant on the property also allegedly threatened to shoot and kill the officers. Police seized firearms from the property a week later. The man admitted to police he would "burn the bloody car if you are in it," but claimed he was being sarcastic. He also denied making threats to the PIRSA officers. The tribunal's judgment noted that police found a loaded double-barrel shotgun in the man's unlocked vehicle, along with ammunition. An air rifle and ammunition were also found inside the house. The grower was later fined $1,000 after pleading guilty to firearms offenses.
