Alpine guide faces investigation after aggressive mountain dispute caught on video

An aggressive confrontation between a mountain guide and hikers on Austria's Großglockner has led to a police investigation and professional repercussions for the guide. A video of the incident, which reportedly occurred last weekend on the Mürztalersteig trail at nearly 3,000 meters, went viral on Instagram.

The footage shows the guide attempting to overtake a couple on a narrow and exposed section of the path. This maneuver, allegedly against mountain etiquette, sparked a heated verbal exchange. The video captures the guide gesturing aggressively, shouting, and eventually grabbing the arm of one of the hikers. The hikers reportedly filmed the encounter.

Police in Matrei, East Tyrol, have opened an investigation into the guide for endangering physical safety following a complaint. The Kalser Mountain Guide Association, while noting the guide was not a member but had been privately hired, announced they would no longer facilitate work for him. The Austrian Mountain and Ski Guide Association also stated it would review the incident, acknowledging that overtaking is common but must be done with coordination and safety. Disciplinary action against the guide is possible.
