Alpine skiing-Double Olympic champion Brignone has further knee surgery

Italy's celebrated Olympic ski champion, Federica Brignone, has successfully undergone further surgery on her left knee. The procedure, performed on Tuesday, involved the removal of a plate and screws that were surgically inserted last year. This hardware was necessary after Brignone sustained multiple leg fractures and a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during the national championships.

Despite the serious injuries, Brignone, now 36, made a remarkable comeback to win double Olympic gold medals in the super-G and giant slalom at the Milano-Cortina Games in February. The Italian Winter Sports Federation confirmed that the surgery was successful and anticipates Brignone will be able to resume physical activity in the coming weeks.

Brignone herself had expressed on Facebook prior to the operation that she opted for the additional surgery due to persistent pain during skiing and other activities. Her recovery timeline positions her well for the upcoming Alpine ski World Cup season, which commences in late October with a giant slalom event in Soelden, Austria. The World Championships are scheduled for next February in Crans-Montana, Switzerland.
