Altmaier upsets Medvedev to reach Halle semifinals

Daniel Altmaier achieved a career-defining victory on Friday, defeating world No. 7 Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-4 to reach the Halle Open semifinals. The win marks Altmaier's most significant career achievement.

Fueled by the home crowd, the 27-year-old German needed 2 hours and 43 minutes to overcome the Russian, a two-time finalist at the tournament. This marks Altmaier's third ATP tour semifinal and his first since 2021. He is set to play against either Felix Auger-Aliassime or Frances Tiafoe in the next round.

On the other side of the draw, top seed Alexander Zverev continued his impressive run, securing his tenth consecutive victory by beating Raphael Collignon 7-6(10), 7-6(2). Zverev, who recently won Roland Garros, is aiming for his first grass-court title. He will face Taylor Fritz in the semifinals, having lost their last six encounters.

Fritz advanced by defeating fellow American Ben Shelton 6-7(5), 7-6(8), 7-6(3) in a match where he saved a match point. Fritz, ranked No. 9, served 24 aces and saved all four break points he faced. This victory marks Fritz's first win against a Top 10 opponent since November and his first win of the year.
