Amanda Knox's comedy show sparks outrage from Meredith Kercher's family

Amanda Knox is facing widespread criticism and dismay for her upcoming stand-up comedy show in Edinburgh, titled 'Amanda Knox: Cartwheel'. The performance, part of the Fringe Festival, will see Knox, who was acquitted alongside Raffaele Sollecito of the 2007 murder of British student Meredith Kercher in Perugia, Italy, take the stage for a 10-day run.

The decision has ignited an "appalled" reaction from Meredith Kercher's family. Through their Italian lawyer, they have branded the initiative "offensive and deplorable." Francesco Maresca, who served as civil party lawyer for the Kercher family during the trials in Italy, called the show "a tasteless insult to Meredith's memory." He expressed a loss of hope that Knox could "understand the feelings" of grief experienced by the Kercher family, given the "heavy gray areas" that have always surrounded the case.

Knox, now nearly 40 and having previously authored books and participated in documentaries and a TV series about her ordeal, defends her choice. In an interview with The Telegraph, she stated her belief that Meredith, whom she described as an "intelligent and refined girl," would have "appreciated the show." Knox insists her intention is to "joke about how I was vilified, not about her murder."

She further explained that the Edinburgh stage represents a "return to my theatrical origins" and a nod to her youthful passion for comedy and musicals. Responding to concerns about the appropriateness of the subject matter, Knox cited advice from "other comedians" who suggested she couldn't ignore "the elephant in the room" of her life when starting her comedy career. The show's premise has also drawn criticism on social media and from various British media outlets, with some labeling it as a manifestation of "narcissism."
