Amazon agrees workers' rights deal with Italian unions

Amazon has reached a significant agreement with Italian trade unions, establishing the first national collective bargaining deal with the e-commerce giant in any country. The accord covers crucial aspects of employee rights, including leave policies and the use of video surveillance.

The agreement, signed by the Filt CGIL, Fit CISL, and Uiltrasporti unions, applies to 57 Amazon sites operating across Italy. Unions hailed the deal as a landmark achievement, particularly noting the provisions related to video surveillance. Images captured by surveillance systems cannot be used for disciplinary purposes, offering employees greater protection.

Furthermore, the agreement enhances flexibility for employees by granting them the right to take parental leave in increments as small as one hour. This provision aims to improve work-life balance for parents working at Amazon facilities in Italy.

Amazon expressed satisfaction with the agreement, stating in a release that it welcomes the deal for introducing new tools for flexibility and work-life balance, while also strengthening existing ones. This accord builds upon an initial protocol signed between Amazon and the unions in 2021, indicating a progression in labor relations between the company and its Italian workforce.
