AMD to invest up to $7.4 trillion won in AI firm Anthropic, building chip supply alliance

U.S. semiconductor giant AMD is set to invest up to $5 billion in generative artificial intelligence (AI) developer Anthropic, forging a significant alliance in the competitive AI chip market. The deal, valued at approximately 7.4 trillion Korean won, signals a major commitment from AMD to bolster its position in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

As part of the agreement, Anthropic will make substantial commitments to adopt AMD's cutting-edge AI accelerators. This includes a large-scale deployment of AMD's latest graphics processing unit (GPU), the 'MI450,' which is slated to be integrated starting in the first half of 2027. The scale of this adoption is considerable, with reports indicating a total capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW).

This strategic partnership is expected to enhance Anthropic's capabilities in developing advanced AI models, while providing AMD with a crucial customer for its high-performance AI hardware.
