American Airlines resumes direct Miami-Caracas flights after airport repairs begin

American Airlines has restored its direct connection between Miami and Caracas, bringing back two daily flights after a roughly 10-week interruption at Venezuela’s main international airport.

The service resumed Thursday, Sept. 3, between Miami International Airport and Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía. The suspension followed damage caused by the June 24 earthquakes, shortly after American Airlines had returned to the Venezuelan market on April 30 following seven years without commercial service between the United States and Venezuela.

During the closure, the airline kept an alternative route available between Miami and Maracaibo, which began operating on July 14. American Airlines also offered passengers options to change their itineraries because of the disruption.

The schedule includes two daily Miami-Caracas flights. Envoy Air will operate one frequency with an Embraer E175, while American Airlines will operate the other with a Boeing 737-8. The airline’s booking system shows availability for September and later months.

Maiquetía is operating under an emergency arrangement while repairs continue. Authorities have installed four temporary modular terminals in the parking area, with check-in counters, waiting areas, medical assistance and passenger transport to aircraft. Their initial capacity is 2,168 passengers a day. Venezuela’s Transport Minister Francisco Garcés said authorities aim to increase operating capacity gradually as reconstruction proceeds.
