Amir Masdi Aims Beyond Best Vocal at AJL40, Embraces Composer Role

Singer Amir Masdi is not solely focused on securing the best vocal award at the upcoming Anugerah Juara Lagu (AJL40) in August. He is also meticulously planning a distinctive stage performance for his song 'Nurcinta,' which he himself composed alongside Edry Abdul Halim. This dual role as performer and composer adds significant pressure, as he aims to deliver a memorable show that captivates his dedicated fanbase, the Amir Masdi United.

Nurcinta means light of love, so perhaps there will be elements of light or something glamorous on stage later.

Masdi hinted that 'Nurcinta,' meaning 'light of love,' might incorporate elements of light or glamour in its staging. He recalled his previous performance for the song 'Sengaja,' which featured mirrors, a cameo by Amelia Henderson, and other props. For 'Nurcinta,' his management is considering three concepts: a big-budget production, a moderate-budget approach, or a minimalist yet impactful presentation.

For Nurcinta, we have three plans: either to spend big, a moderate budget, or a minimalist concept that is 'just nice'. These three concepts have not yet been finalized by my management.

He acknowledged that competing at AJL is never easy, with the 10 qualifying songs representing Malaysia's top musical talent. The pressure is amplified this year due to his involvement as a composer, requiring him to maintain the song's quality while ensuring his performance is not overly excessive. Masdi stated that each AJL edition has its own challenges, and while past performances can be improved, he is determined not to dwell on past setbacks.

When entering as a composer this year with Edry Abdul Halim, the pressure feels many times higher. I have to maintain the credibility of the song and at the same time ensure the performance that night is not too excessive.

The postponement of AJL40 to August has impacted Masdi's schedule, but he views this positively. Although he initially preferred completing tasks quickly to focus on other plans, the extended preparation time for AJL40 offers a valuable opportunity to refine their concepts and discover new ideas. His past experiences have taught him and his team the importance of thorough preparation, aiming for a performance that feels authentic rather than forced.

Personally, I actually prefer if this task could be completed quickly so that I can focus on other plans. When I learned that AJL this time is quite late, in August, we had to plan for a longer time. However, this is also a good opportunity because we have more time to prepare thoroughly. This actually gives us space to find new inspirations.
