Amoy’s mother dies amid dispute over who will control her funeral arrangements

The death of Tam Mei-kam, the mother of late Hong Kong singing star Anita Mui, has been followed by a dispute over who has the right to arrange her funeral.

Tam’s eldest son, Mui Kai-ming, went to the hospital after her death and told media he would take charge of the arrangements as her son. He also said he would use Anita Mui’s trust fund to give his mother a grand funeral.

Poon Siu-man, a longtime friend of Tam and a veteran Hong Kong media figure, quickly challenged that claim. Poon said Tam had already made a will and placed responsibility for her funeral arrangements entirely with her grandson. She said Mui Kai-ming had no right to intervene.

Mui Kai-ming responded forcefully, saying Poon had no standing to contest him and that he would seek his rights through legal means. The dispute follows a publicly known breakdown in the mother-and-son relationship. The two reportedly had not seen each other for two years.
