Amusan battled injury for Commonwealth Games bronze, reveals in interview

Tobi Amusan, the world record holder in the 100m hurdles, secured a bronze medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, adding to her collection of major championship accolades. Despite the achievement, Amusan revealed she competed while managing a significant knee injury, having torn a tendon and suffered a bad fall during training camp.

It’s all been God, hard work, dedication and discipline. I’ve always been clear about what I want to achieve in this sport, and my goals are what wake me up every day and keep me going. That’s really been the secret.

"I’m just thankful that God kept everything together for me to be able to get on the podium once again," Amusan stated after the race. She described her performance as "iffy" coming into the championship due to the knee issue. The athlete also noted the cold weather, explaining her use of gloves as a measure to stay warm due to anemia.

Reflecting on the race, Amusan expressed that while she knows her capabilities, the primary goal is always execution, which she felt wasn't perfect in the final. Maybe I would have warmed up a little less when I felt something and just prepared for the race instead of trying to push it.

Looking forward, Amusan's immediate plans involve seeking treatment and recovery. "With what I’m dealing with right now, I just want to go and get treatment, recover properly and then look forward to the rest of the season," she explained. Despite the challenges, she remains thankful for the bronze, acknowledging that "it could have been worse."

Yeah, it was a little bit cold out there, and I’m anaemic, so I try to stay warm every opportunity I get. I had to do my best to make sure I stayed warm before the race.
