An Epic New Trailer for Les Misérables Arrives Weeks Before Release

StudioCanal has unveiled a two-minute trailer packed with explosions, barricade battles and familiar faces from Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables. Fred Cavayé’s adaptation will arrive in French cinemas on October 14, only weeks after its presentation in competition at the San Sebastián International Film Festival, held from September 18 to 26.

The new images bring together Vincent Lindon as Jean Valjean, Tahar Rahim as the relentless Inspector Javert and Noémie Merlant as Fantine. Camille Cottin and Benjamin Lavernhe play the Thénardiers, the venal couple whose two daughters, Éponine and Azelma, also feature in the story.

The trailer returns to the episode that changes Valjean’s life: his theft of a loaf of bread. After 19 years in prison, he decides to change and do good under a false identity, eventually becoming a respected local notable. But Javert, a police officer driven by an equally troubled past, continues to hunt him in an effort to send him back to prison.

Set in a Paris shaken by revolution, the film follows Valjean as he tries to protect Cosette and complete his redemption. The trailer also shows the love story between Cosette, played by Megan Northam, and Marius, played by Vassili Schneider, alongside Fantine’s tragic fate under the care of the Thénardiers. The production, backed by a budget of 36 million euros, seeks to establish itself among recent large-scale historical and literary epics such as The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo.
