An Giang Police Arrest Bank Employee for Alleged 21 Billion VND Loan Scam

An Giang provincial police have arrested Nguyen Thi Thoai My, a 35-year-old former bank employee, for allegedly defrauding individuals of more than 21.4 billion VND (approximately $840,000 USD) through a sophisticated loan-rollover scam. My was apprehended in Ho Chi Minh City and transferred back to An Giang for further investigation.

Authorities revealed that My, who previously worked at a bank branch in Rach Gia ward, exploited her position. Between February and September 2025, she devised a scheme to borrow money from one person to repay another, while also using funds from new loans to partially cover the principal and interest for existing lenders. This created an illusion of reliability.

My allegedly told victims she needed the money for bank loan rollovers, promising to return the principal and agreed-upon interest within days. However, she reportedly used the borrowed funds to settle her personal debts before absconding. This fraudulent activity led to five victims losing over 21.4 billion VND.

Following the victims' complaints, the An Giang Provincial Police initiated an investigation, leading to an arrest warrant for My in April. She had fled her residence, evading initial capture. After a period of tracking, police successfully located and arrested her on July 9 in Ho Chi Minh City, where she had been hiding.
