An insult sparked the creation of Nigeria's Osun State

Osun State, established 35 years ago, owes its existence, indirectly, to an insult delivered in 1945. The creation of Oshun Division in 1951 and the formation of the Action Group political party that same year were part of a broader political reorganization in Nigeria's Western Region. The new division provided a platform for the Osun people to voice their concerns directly, while the Action Group offered a political avenue for their broader ambitions.

The incident that galvanized the Osun leaders occurred when Chief Salami Agbaje, a prominent and wealthy Ibadan businessman, sought a promotion within the city's chieftaincy hierarchy. Agbaje, an early adopter of modern economic practices like banking and international trade, had amassed significant wealth and influence. He had also risen rapidly through the chieftaincy ranks and was seeking a further advancement.

To support his bid, Agbaje enlisted the help of traditional rulers from the Osun area to intercede with Oba Abass Aleshinloye, the Olubadan of Ibadan. When these royal emissaries arrived at the Ibadan palace, they were met with a stark lack of customary hospitality. They were not immediately offered seats, nor were they provided with traditional kola nuts or water. When one of the visiting Obas questioned this treatment, a member of the Ibadan council dismissively replied, "An Ibadan chief is the equal of a king elsewhere." This remark conveyed unmistakable contempt, diminishing the status of the royal representatives.

Although Agbaje ultimately received his promotion, the insult deeply offended the Osun traditional rulers. They resolved that the Osun area must break away from the jurisdiction of the Ibadan Native Authority. This decision marked a turning point, leading to the eventual creation of Osun State and a distinct political identity for its people.
