Anak Krakatau Eruption Disrupts 209 Flights at Soekarno-Hatta Airport

The eruption of Anak Krakatau disrupted 209 flights at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, affecting 22,798 passengers after officials extended the closure because volcanic ash was detected in the area.

International services recorded 16 cancellations, seven delays and five rescheduled flights. The affected routes included Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney, Seoul and Incheon, Doha, Amsterdam, and Kuala Lumpur. Singapore had the highest number of affected international flights, with 11.

Domestic services recorded four cancellations and one diversion. Routes affected included Lampung, Denpasar, and Surabaya. Makassar recorded the highest number of affected domestic flights, with 16.

Despite the disruption, 170 aircraft parked overnight at the airport remained safe. They included 66 aircraft at Terminal 1, 51 at Terminal 2, 49 at Terminal 3, and four in the cargo area.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation said the airport closure continued after an inspection found indications of volcanic ash. A paper test conducted by the Soekarno-Hatta Class I Meteorological Station between 6:05 and 6:35 a.m. on Sunday again indicated ash distribution, prompting officials to extend the closure until 9:30 a.m. Authorities, airlines, the airport operator, air navigation services, and the meteorological agency continued monitoring conditions. Passengers were told to check updates from their airlines and not travel to the airport until they had confirmation of their flight status.
