Anak Krakatau erupts in Indonesia, disrupting flights

Anak Krakatau erupted again on Sunday, sending volcanic ash into the sky and disrupting flights at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

Indonesia's meteorological agency, BMKG, said the volcano first erupted on Friday. Lava fountains rose from the crater and thunderous sounds were heard, followed by two more eruptions on Sunday.

The volcano stands in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra. BMKG said the ash column reached 6,000 meters on the Java side and as high as 15,000 meters on the Sumatra side. The airport, about 150 kilometers from Anak Krakatau, suspended flights until 1:30 p.m. local time, or 6:30 a.m. GMT, because of increased volcanic activity.

The eruption recalled the volcano's destructive history. A powerful eruption in 2018 triggered a tsunami along the shores of Sumatra and Java that killed 430 people and caused much of the volcano to collapse. Anak Krakatau, meaning "Child of Krakatau," formed after the legendary 1883 Krakatau eruption, which is believed to have killed about 35,000 people.
