Anak Krakatau Records Its Strongest Eruptive Activity of 2026

Anak Krakatau has recorded its strongest eruptive activity of 2026, with continuous eruptions reported from the Sunda Strait volcano between the night of Sept. 4 and Sept. 5.

Muhammad Dika Nurzaman, an observer of Anak Krakatau, said the activity appeared to include a lava fountain that began at 11:07 p.m. local time and continued afterward. He said one eruption earthquake had been recorded, with a maximum amplitude of 70 millimeters and a duration of 21,600 seconds.

The series of eruptions from Sept. 4 to 5 was the most intense since the volcano was placed on Alert status.

More than 240 eruptions have now occurred since the volcano was placed on Alert status on July 2, 2026. Dika said the latest activity came from the volcano’s own magma reservoir and did not trigger activity at other Indonesian volcanoes.

The booming sounds were produced by the eruption of Anak Krakatau traveling through the air, not by an earthquake or ground movement.

The heightened activity produced rumbling and booming sounds heard as far away as the coastal areas of Banten and Lampung. Dika said the sounds came from the eruption traveling through the air, not from an earthquake or ground movement.

Visual monitoring has been disrupted. The last clear observation, at 1 a.m., recorded a lava burst, but several monitoring devices near the crater, including CCTV cameras, may have been damaged by eruptive material. Despite the high intensity, the volcano’s status has not been raised and remains at Level III, or Alert. Dika said the tsunami threat was very small, and urged coastal residents to remain calm and stay outside a three-kilometer radius of Anak Krakatau.
