Analyst: Orsi governing with opposition ideas, alienating voters

President Yamandú Orsi's administration is governing with the ideas of those who did not vote for him, alienating his own supporters, according to political scientist Óscar Bottinelli. Bottinelli, president of Factum, analyzed the current government's situation, pointing to recent approval ratings that show a negative balance, with Factum's latest measurement indicating 56% disapproval.

"You are governing with the ideas of those who did not vote for you and will not vote for you, and you are disappointing your own people," Bottinelli stated in a dialogue with Arriba Gente (Canal 10). He observed that Orsi and a significant portion of the Frente Amplio coalition are shifting towards a political space that is already solidified by the opposition, the Republican Coalition, which possesses strong leadership.

Bottinelli elaborated that Orsi's administration faces a "stone wall" regardless of its movements, as public expectations often exceed what can be achieved. He identified a strong continuity in economic and international policy as a key factor in voter disillusionment. "Beyond some kind of errors, which are not just communication errors, there are political errors," he added.

The analyst cited Orsi's attendance at a conference organized by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio as a political conception error, not merely a communication misstep. Bottinelli also noted that Orsi's international policy continues the direction set by the previous government under Luis Lacalle Pou. However, he pointed out that while Lacalle Pou's policy had isolated him internationally, Orsi's current policy aligns with a broader trend in Latin America, yet it still alienates Frente Amplio voters who were initially against it.

This disconnect, Bottinelli believes, weakens the "spiritual commitment" of Frente Amplio supporters. While acknowledging that Orsi may have reached a floor in terms of disapproval ratings, the core issue remains whether the current political line is driven by conviction. He concluded that there is a significant dissociation between the president's actions and the sentiments of his base.
