El País was founded on September 14, 1918, by Leonel Aguirre, Eduardo Rodríguez Larreta, and Washington Beltrán Barbat, with Carlos Scheck joining in 1919. It is currently owned by El País S.A. and was historically associated with the National Party (Partido Nacional). The newspaper previously belonged to the same media group as the television network Teledoce, with shareholders of El País forming Sociedad Televisora Larrañaga in 1962 to manage Teledoce.

El País is a national Uruguayan daily newspaper recognized for having the largest circulation in the country. Historically, it has been aligned with the National Party and conservative-liberal ideology. Its editorial focus covers social, political, and economic news in Uruguay and the Mercosur region, often reflecting a critical stance towards leftist political figures and advocating for order. While Uruguay generally enjoys strong press freedoms, Reporters Without Borders and Freedom House have noted increasing pressure on journalists, including political pressure, threats, and civil lawsuits, sometimes initiated by state officials. Concerns have also been raised by the Committee to Protect Journalists regarding proposed broadcast laws that could potentially lead to state control over media content.
