Anambra security forces kill six suspected secessionists, lose operative in gun battle

A joint security team in Anambra State, Nigeria, has conducted a raid on hideouts belonging to a secessionist movement in the Ogbaru Local Government Area, resulting in the deaths of six suspected armed members. The operation, which involved personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, Nigerian Navy, and community operatives, aimed to dismantle criminal networks and violent non-state actors.

On sighting the security personnel, the suspects opened fire, leading to a prolonged exchange of gunfire. At the end of the encounter, six suspected members of the armed group were neutralised, while others fled the area, with some reportedly sustaining gunshot injuries.

During the prolonged gun battle, one security operative was killed and another injured when an explosive device detonated. The injured operative is receiving medical attention. The security forces recovered two pump-action guns and charms from the camps, which were subsequently dismantled. Several other suspects reportedly fled the area with gunshot injuries.

The operation, however, recorded the death of one security operative and injury to another when an explosive device suspected to have been planted in the area detonated.

The Commissioner of Police for Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji, commended the security personnel for their courage and professionalism. He highlighted the importance of intelligence sharing, inter-agency cooperation, and community support in confronting violent criminal elements. The commissioner also extended condolences to the family of the fallen operative and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
