Anambra State Enrolls Over 10,000 People Living with HIV in Health Insurance Scheme

The Anambra State Government has achieved a significant milestone by enrolling 10,384 People Living with HIV (PLHIV) into its state health insurance scheme. This move is designed to bolster access to affordable, high-quality, and sustainable healthcare services for those affected by HIV across the state.

We assessed the implementation of the integration of HIV services into the state’s health insurance scheme. We shared experiences and identified practical measures to improve service delivery.

Nkem Okeke, the executive director and project manager of the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency, announced the progress at a recent stakeholders' meeting. He highlighted the integration of HIV services into the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency as a key strategy for improving healthcare access and ensuring uninterrupted treatment for beneficiaries.

Okeke stated that this achievement positions Anambra among the leading states in Nigeria implementing such integration. The initiative underscores the government's commitment to vulnerable populations and aims to enhance long-term health outcomes and support systems. The stakeholders' meeting focused on reviewing progress, fostering collaboration, and devising strategies to expand the reach of HIV services through the insurance scheme.

Our discussions also focused on strengthening implementation and increasing enrolment to sustain the gains already recorded.

Discussions during the meeting involved sharing experiences and identifying practical measures to enhance service delivery and address challenges hindering access to HIV care. The agency reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring no person living with HIV in Anambra is denied quality healthcare. Okeke also stressed the importance of regular testing, early diagnosis, prompt treatment, and continued efforts to combat stigma and discrimination associated with the disease.
