Anambra youths honour former NBA chair and others for community development

Young people in Anambra State have honoured former Nigerian Bar Association chairman Jideofor Okongwu and 11 other people for their contributions to community development and youth empowerment.

The Anambra State Town Unions Council Youth Wing presented the Anambra Community Role Model awards to recipients from the 10 communities that make up Anaocha Local Government Area. Those recognised included Anaocha chairman Romanus Ibekwe, APGA House of Representatives candidate Chukwudi Oli, former ASTUC Youth president Osita Kingsley Ozalagba and several other community figures.

Okongwu, who previously chaired the NBA’s Anaocha branch, said young people should make discipline, resilience and hard work priorities as they seek to progress and serve their families and communities.

This milestone serves as a powerful reminder of why we started the community development journey and inspires us to keep pushing boundaries, innovating, and contributing positively to the development of our communities.

Ken Okoli, president general of the ASTUC Youth Wing and convener of the event, said the group’s agenda reflects the pillars of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration, including security, law and order, economic transformation, human capital development, governance, values and the environment.

Okoli said development could not rely on infrastructure alone. He pointed to values such as patriotism, self-reliance, discipline, truth, justice, community, dignity of labour, tolerance and love as principles the organisation wanted young people to practise in daily life.

We are here today in Anaocha LGA, because ASTUC youth believes that the future of Anambra cannot be built by infrastructure alone. It must also be built on values, character, responsible citizenship and positive examples for our young people.
