Ancient tradition carried forward in Csíksomlyó

The world-renowned Csíksomlyó basilica and monastery in Szeklerland are undergoing a significant renovation project, aiming to preserve their historical and spiritual importance. Work began in the fall of 2024, prompted by the urgent need to repair the roof and drainage systems. The project has progressed through stages, with the sanctuary and nave roofing, as well as the church facade, being renewed in 2025. Current efforts focus on repairing the remaining facades and towers, with the monastery's roof and exterior also being addressed.

Funding for this ambitious restoration is a collaborative effort. A substantial portion comes from the donations of the faithful, reflecting the community's deep connection to the site. Additionally, the renovation has received support from the Orbán government, Romania's Ministry of Culture, the Municipality of Csíkszereda, and the Hargita County Council. The Franciscan order has expressed gratitude to all contributors for their role in the renewal of the complex.

As part of the renovation, a time capsule was sealed, documenting key aspects of the shrine's spiritual life. It includes details about Sunday masses, noting that thousands attend the first Saturday candlelit processions and that the Pentecost pilgrimage draws between 300,000 and 400,000 pilgrims annually. The capsule also marks the upcoming 150th anniversary of the basilica's consecration on August 20th, a day when Brothers Ágoston and Márk will take their first vows.

The Franciscans also provided a realistic assessment of the province's situation, acknowledging a decline in numbers that necessitates a structural reorganization. The leadership has called for a rethinking of the community's future operations. A message for future generations, quoting P. Eloi Leclerc, was chosen for the capsule, emphasizing God's unconditional love and support, urging them to emulate this by taking action and helping others.
