Ancient Turkish city Patara glows at night with new illumination project

The ancient Lycian Union capital of Patara, located in Turkey's Antalya province, is captivating visitors with a new night-time museum experience. Thousands of years of history are now illuminated after dark, offering a magical atmosphere for exploring the remarkably preserved ancient structures.

Escaping the scorching daytime temperatures, which can reach 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit), visitors can now wander through the restored Nero Lighthouse, the ancient theater, and the assembly building. These iconic sites, brought back to life through extensive restoration efforts, are now visible and explorable in the gentle evening breeze, providing a distinctly different way to connect with the past.

Since 1988, excavation and restoration work has been carried out continuously at Patara Ancient City. Especially after 2020 was declared 'The Year of Patara,' work at the site accelerated.

Dr. Şevket Aktaş, Head of Excavations at Patara and a faculty member at Akdeniz University's Archaeology Department, explained the significance of the project. "Since 1988, excavation and restoration work has been carried out continuously at Patara Ancient City," he stated. "Especially after 2020 was declared 'The Year of Patara,' work at the site accelerated."

Aktaş highlighted the recent completion of the Nero Lighthouse restoration in 2025 and the subsequent lighting of the surrounding areas, including pathways. "This night museum application allows our visitors to experience historical structures in a different atmosphere," he added. The initiative aims to broaden the reach of Patara's rich cultural heritage, offering a unique journey through history after sunset.
