ANDE postpones promotion launch amid looming union protest

The Paraguayan state electricity company ANDE abruptly postponed its planned "Ñande Ahorro 2026" promotion launch, originally scheduled for Tuesday, June 9, 2026. The decision came after the union representing ANDE workers, Sitrande, announced its own demonstration on the same day.

Sitrande called its members to protest against government decrees 5306, 5307, 5860, and 5861, which they argue are "sell-out decrees." The union fears these regulations will lead to the privatization of energy and preferential tariffs for certain sectors. "ANDE is in danger! They are going to steal everything from us!" warned Adolfo Villalba, Sitrande's general secretary, urging workers to defend their jobs and future.

The union specifically targeted government officials, including ministers Javier Giménez, Gustavo Villate, and "delivery lawyer" Ilo Moreno, accusing them of "infamous subsidy." The workers demand the immediate repeal of these decrees.

Faced with the prospect of internal conflict and public scrutiny, ANDE's administration, led by Félix Sosa, opted to delay its press conference. The event was reportedly rescheduled for June 10, 2026, in the same location and time, with the hope that the union's protest would have concluded or lessened in intensity.
