The official appointment took place at Buckingham Palace, where the King formally tasked Burnham with forming a government.

Burnham, widely known as the "King of the North" for his popularity in Manchester, becomes the latest hope for the Labour Party to overcome the nation's difficulties. Although the party secured a decisive election victory in the summer of 2024 under Starmer, internal divisions prevented them from fully utilizing their parliamentary majority. This political instability has allowed the right-populist Reform UK party to gain a significant lead in opinion polls.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has congratulated Burnham and extended an invitation to visit Berlin. The German government anticipates maintaining close ties and ensuring a seamless transition of cooperation from the previous administration under Keir Starmer, according to government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius.

Burnham, who was elected leader of the Labour Party on Friday, has pledged to prioritize the daily concerns of citizens and address the escalating cost of living. His prior experience in government includes serving as Health Secretary under Prime Minister Gordon Brown in the 2000s. He had previously sought leadership of the Labour Party twice before, in 2010 and 2015.

The new prime minister inherits a challenging landscape, facing the same issues that Starmer struggled to resolve: a weak economy, a decline in international standing, social inequalities, and pressing concerns such as housing shortages and high energy costs. Burnham is the seventh head of government in the UK within a decade. Starmer's resignation was prompted by poor poll numbers, a significant local election defeat, and the growing challenge posed by Reform UK.
