Andy Burnham appointed UK Prime Minister by King Charles III

Andy Burnham, the former mayor of Manchester, has officially taken office as the United Kingdom's Prime Minister, appointed by King Charles III. Burnham, a prominent figure in the Labour Party, succeeds Keir Starmer and is expected to lead the nation through a period of crisis.

Burnham's ascent to the premiership follows his recent election as Labour leader. The King formally entrusted him with forming a government at Buckingham Palace. He steps into the role previously held by Starmer, who resigned in June under pressure. Burnham, often called the "King of the North" for his popularity in Manchester, has been seen as Labour's hope for navigating the country out of its current difficulties.

Despite Labour's significant electoral victory in the summer of 2024 under Starmer, the party struggled to leverage its parliamentary majority due to internal disputes. This has allowed the right-populist Reform UK party to gain a considerable lead in recent opinion polls. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz congratulated Burnham and extended an invitation to visit Berlin, with the German government expressing a desire for continued close cooperation.

Burnham, who served in Gordon Brown's cabinet as Health Secretary in the 2000s, has announced a focus on addressing the everyday concerns of citizens, particularly the high cost of living. He previously made unsuccessful bids for the Labour leadership in 2010 and 2015. The new Prime Minister faces many of the same challenges that Starmer could not resolve, including a struggling economy, diminishing international influence, social inequality, housing shortages, and high energy costs. He is the seventh British head of government in ten years.
