Ángel Correa signs for River Plate as part of major squad overhaul

River Plate has secured a significant offensive reinforcement with the signing of forward Ángel Correa from Mexican club Tigres UANL. Correa arrives in strong form, having scored 23 goals in his last 54 matches, and is considered a key attacking addition for the "Millonario." Local press reports suggest the club paid over 15 million for his transfer.

This move is part of a broader squad overhaul, which has seen the repatriation of Lucas Beltrán and Colombian striker Rafael Santos Borré. Beltrán, 25, returns after stints with Italy's Fiorentina and Spain's Valencia. Borré, 31, rejoins the club that won the 2018 Copa Libertadores against Boca Juniors, following spells in German football and with Brazil's Internacional.

The team, managed by Eduardo Coudet, recently suffered a 1-3 defeat to Aldosivi in the Copa Argentina, highlighting defensive and midfield weaknesses. To address these issues, River Plate is also bolstering its defense with the experienced Nicolás Otamendi, 38, who returns to Argentina after playing for European clubs, most recently Benfica. Right-back Gonzalo Montiel, a World Cup participant with Argentina, has also returned and will compete for a spot with another new signing, Uruguayan Giovanni González.

In midfield, Uruguayan Mauro Arambarri joins River Plate after nine seasons with Spain's Getafe. The squad already boasts experienced players like World Cup winner Marcos Acuña and Lucas Martínez Quarta. Despite the presence of other strong midfielders such as Aníbal Moreno, Fausto Vera, and Juan Fernando Quintero, the team has struggled to consistently perform at its best in the first half of the year. The club is undergoing a significant squad renewal, integrating young talent while parting ways with some established players.
